For the first time in the past week, I am suddenly filled with the most amazing sense of happiness and optimism for life.
I walk into the kitchen, pour myself a cup of coffee, and climb back into bed. I let out a sigh of pure contentment. I am completely relaxed; my mind is empty of any negative thoughts.
I pick the phone up.
“Vic, the sun is out, and I feel so good today!”
“You know what Megs, I feel exactly the same. I had the best sleep too, I feel so refreshed!”
So, with a mutual enthusiasm to seize the day, we make a plan. The first thing on the list is brunch at our favourite café.
We sit outside. It’s a bit chilly, but the air feels so refreshing on my skin. I am so content. I glance over at Vic, she is smiling to herself, just watching the world go by.
At that moment, I realised that we really had begun to shine. Today we were radiating good vibes, and nothing is going to get us down.
We spent the rest of day doing whatever we fancied. We didn’t utter a word about the hurt that we had been feeling. Do you know why? Because it didn’t even cross our minds. Not once.
Sometimes we get so consumed in negativity that we stop appreciating the simple beauty that the world gifts us with every day.
I read somewhere that the key to being happy is simply waking up each day and consciously deciding that you are happy. I think that there is a lot of truth in that. I could have woken up, with the sunshine streaming in and the birds singing, and I could have filled my mind with sadness that I was alone. But I didn’t. I was grateful for the moment of solidarity. I was grateful for the peace. I was grateful for the beauty of the moment.
So, our homework for the week is a simple task.
Take a moment each day to stop and notice something beautiful. Whether it be the innocent smile on a child face, or the sunlight breaking through between the clouds. Deicide in that moment that you are happy. Seize that moment for yourself, take a deep breath, and shine on.
